Dementia
I am choosing to do my research paper on Dementia. I want to know what dementia is and why it attacks human memory. This disease is personal to me because my grandmother died of dementia and now my grandmother-in-law suffers from this as well. My grandmother-in-law (Grandma) has gone downhill fast with the disease. In December the family had to make the decision to have Grandma put in a nursing home. I go see her several times a week and it just gets harder and harder to do. She no longer remembers who we are and she has no idea where she is at. I want to understand what is happening to her brain. Grandma is 93 years old and had minimal health issues until she broke her hip a couple years ago. The doctor says that the trauma of breaking her bone set dementia in full swing.
I feel like there isn’t enough awareness about dementia. Dementia affects millions of people yet so many people don’t understand what it is and how it works. So many elderly people are mentally mistreated because people truly do not understand what dementia does to them. I could not imagine what it must feel like to no longer be able to remember those that have loved you for all these years.
I think dementia only affects the elderly. My understanding of dementia is it attacks the part of the brain that controls memory. I also think that in order to fully understand what dementia is we have to understand how our brain processes and retrieves memories.
I believe that the people that love and take care of those that suffer from this disease are affected mentally by this disease. I also believe that with awareness to this disease we could improve the chances of finding a cure.
Currently there is no cure for dementia. Dementia is not prejudice it doesn’t matter whether you are male or female. Dementia is a blanket disease with Alzheimer’s being the most common form.
I still need to know how dementia works and what causes its onset. I also need to know if there are choices that we make in our lifetime that enhances our chance of having this disease. I am hoping to learn how our brains process and retrieve memories. I also am hoping to learn what exactly dementia is and how it is differnet from Alzheimer’s.
